Introduction
We are excited to share our pipeline for creating a 3D character, which involves a six-step process to build a visually appealing model. These stages include design and concept, sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, baking maps, and texturing. Throughout the process, we use industry-standard software to ensure high-quality results.
Step 1: Design & Concept
The first step is to develop and express our idea through a concept. We start with a clear 3D character design, turning our initial idea into a detailed concept. This stage is crucial as it forms the foundation for all subsequent work. A well-defined concept acts as a roadmap, guiding the entire process and saving time and effort. With a clear concept, we have a precise vision of the final result and the necessary steps to achieve it
Step 2: Sculpting
Once the character and concept are established, we move to the sculpting phase where we use 3D character modeling tools to create a detailed digital model. Sculpting involves creating a detailed model on the computer using software that simulates digitized clay. Software like ZBrush and Blender simulates sculpting with digital clay, allowing us to build intricate details in three phases: shaping the basic form, adding major structures, and refining fine details. ZBrush is commonly used for this purpose, although other tools like Sculptris, Blender, Mudbox, and 3DCoat can also be employed.
The goal during sculpting is to create a highly detailed model. To simplify the process, sculpting is divided into three phases:
- First Phase: Establishing the basic shape and silhouette.
- Second Phase: Adding internal structures and major details.
- Third Phase: Refining small details and anatomical features.
Step 3: Retopology
After completing the sculpting process, we have a high poly model with 12 million polygons. This model is too dense for further work and needs optimization. Retopology helps us address this issue by recreating the model with fewer polygons, making it suitable for game engines. This optimized model, known as the low poly model, serves two main purposes:
- Ensuring correct deformation during animation.
- Using the minimum number of polygons to achieve the desired shape.
We use software like Topogun, Maya, 3DCoat, and 3ds Max for retopology. After optimization, the model is reduced to 14,000 polygons, making it ready for the next steps.
Step 4: UV Mapping
UV mapping involves creating a 2D projection of the model, allowing us to apply textures accurately. The UV map dictates how 2D textures are overlaid on the 3D object. When creating a UV map, we aim to hide seams in less visible areas like the inner side of the arm or armpit.
We use specialized software such as RizomUV and UV Layout for UV mapping. Other programs like Maya, 3ds Max, and 3DCoat are also suitable for this task.
Once the model is unwrapped into its 2D version, it becomes ready for the texturing phase. This step is crucial as texturing software requires a 2D representation to apply textures effectively.
Step 5: Bake Maps
This step involves transferring the details from the high poly model to the low poly model using texture maps such as Normal Map and Ambient Occlusion. Fortunately, these maps are generated automatically, with Substance Painter being an excellent tool for baking them. The result is a detailed model with fewer polygons, ready for the next step.
Step 6: Texturing
Texturing enhances the realism of the 3D object by applying bitmap images to its surface. Once we done with the previous step, we enhance the model’s realism by applying textures using 3D character modeling software like Substance Painter and Mari. Commonly used software for this purpose includes Substance Painter, Mari, Quixel, and 3DCoat. Substance Painter allows for procedural texturing and direct painting on the model, enabling the creation of accurate textures for PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials in the engine.
